Thread and Word working to support The Refugee Tales at the Wandsworth Arts Fringe and beyond. 

         

    This event supports the campaign to end the unlimited detention of refugees and asylum seekers in the UK

The title Thread and Word originates from a poem written by the chilean artist and eco poet Cecilia Vicuña.

Thread and Word will be open to the public and will invite participation in a collaborative sewing event with a focus on the 2018 Walk and stories from the  Refugee Tales .

The group Thread and Word has used walking and textiles to bring together people who welcome the opportunity to take part in collaborative events highlighting social issues and sharing stories.

For Thread and Word at WAF participants will be given materials to stitch together using outlines of birds . All materials will be supplied and there is no requirement to have any prior knowledge of stitching or embroidery.

The event will be used to highlight the work and 2018 walk organised by  Refugee Tales, an organisation which is

campaigning for an end unlimited 

detention for asylum seekers in the UK.

Walking with The Waste Land Photo-Diary - 'Mud Walking'

 On Friday the 23rd of February, members from the walking group Walking with The Waste Land and their friends conducted a walk from the Sportsman Car Park in Seasalter, near Whitstable, in Kent.

On this walk we walked to “ Mick’s post” and then experimented with some low tide mud walking, using knots in ropes to record the experience. 

We then returned to Mick’s post where we read a few poetry lines and tied a  knotted rope to Mick’s post in a symbolic ritual of the celebration of Terminus :  http://terminaliafestival.org 

Mick’s post is a white post in Seasalter which has been erected near the sea wall to indicate the boundary for the digging of bait in the estuary.

" 'Terminalia' is such a fascinating, Pagan but completely obvious concept. liminality is a subject that has always fascinated me and also the idea of the process of changing and shift shaping. Did you know that the word 'Weird' originally meant Becoming?

it is also entirely appropriate to the concept of using Myth in the modern world, not just because of the classical references but also because in fact you are crossing boundaries through time and space  -one man all men, one woman all women, one stone all stones.

O and of course the time of year and the shifting from winter into spring."

The Mythic Method and the essence of Modernity,  as I understand it does not mean returning to the past but giving an understanding to the present. Through this walk and it’s connections with Terminus the Roman God who ruled over boundaries we pushed the boundaries of walking and discovered it wasn't easy!
