Friday October 7th at The Garden Gate, at 11.00.a.m

We are preparing for our workshop on Friday at the Garden Gate in Margate, as a part of their 

"Falling Leaves Arts Festival" http://www.thegardengateproject.co.uk/ .

As a part of the Walking with the Waste Land Research Group,  we will be running some workshops at the Garden Gate Community Garden in Margate next Friday from 11a.m. until 2p.m. for visiting groups of young people and adults with learning difficulties.

 Judy Dermott and Linda Telfer will be reading from Burnt Norton and talking about TS Eliot and the poem.

Sharon Rowe is leading on the painting and planting of Succulent boxes (see image below). 

The boxes have been made as a collaborative project between ourselves, the Broadstairs Town Shed project and The Garden Gate. 

I will be making ropes and creating knots with participants to document and record their experience as a "memory" of the sessions.

A big thank you to Jennifer Deakin , Diana Lane and Margaret Hall who are helping us to deliver the workshops.

To the Garden: A Walk and Talk Through Time and the Seasons with TS Eliot

I am organising a walk  in collaboration with local artists,  members of the "A Journey with The Waste Land Forum", and local community organisations on Saturday 8th October.

We will walk from Turner Contemporary to the Garden Gate, starting at 12pm, following the coastal perimeter then heading up to and finishing at the garden at 1.30pm, where there will be various art & craft activities and food and drink, as a part of the "Falling Leaves Art Festival" . The Garden is on the Thanet loop route with buses which run to Margate Centre every 10 - 15 minutes. 

Through a number of sited readings from TS Eliot's poem 'Burnt Norton' and documentary activity, the walk will openly and collaboratively reflect on notions of time and timelessness, consciousness, memory and rhythm in relation to the seasons and gardens.

Also considering the potentialities of the 'walk and talk' format, there will be an opportunity to interact along the way with several "walking books" - practitioners engaged in different areas of local cultural and community activity who will each have different narratives and connections to share. You will be able to sign up for a ten minute slot of conversation with at least one walking book of your choice - further details and available time slots will be shared nearer the time.

Encounters with Sculpture in the City

Introducing the project

Yesterday the film maker and sound artist Harriet Gifford and I embarked on the first of a series of walks around the site of Sculpture in the City. Last year during, the Frieze art week, Stella Loannu, the Co-Director of Sculpture in the City, invited me to the talk," Public Art, who does it serve?". This project has developed out of the discussion that followed the talk and a proposal I submitted to Stella.

A conversation  with a man who passes these sculptures every day and spends time looking at them before heading off to work. He approached us as he thought we were lost. He loves the fingermarks and the rough texture of the work. 

The focus of these walks is on the everyday. We will regularly walk the area and engage with the sculptures, their sites and the people who we come into contact with.

Yesterday's walk exceeded our expectations. Every walk will have its own dynamic,yesterday we went into the space with fresh eyes and open minds. We deliberately avoided having a plan and we certainly did not expect so much rain!




For the purpose of this blog entry I have decided to focus on "encounters".

A conversation with a young boy (aged approx 11 or 12).He described these as weird sculptures, like Pirates of the Caribbean.....

Harriet had her own encounters with her recording of sounds, The Lloyd"s building is humming with activity and the sculptures create their own conduits of sound in their spaces. I am looking forward to catching up with her development of the recorded material.

People love photographing the Leadenhall lifts. It reminded me of Cesar Paternosto's book, "Piedra Abstracta", who decides what is sculpture and what is artefact?

My  painting "Flights of Fancy" is to be exhibited as part of the "Lust for Life" exhibition at the Menier Gallery this August.

The PV is this Thursday July 4th and it would be lovely to see some of you there. There will be a short talkat 7.00pm on PV night, given by Beatriz Acevedo.

I was contacted by Renee Rilexie the artist and curator from the Artists Pool last September, who let me know this exhibition was in the making. Coincidentally I had been working on some paintings inspired by the Argentine Giga, a giant hummingbird. I was also experimenting with the painting styles of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. I was using the Giga as a metaphor for how inspiration travels. At the same time I had visited the Alexander McQueen retrospective at the V & A, and so, "Flights of Fancy" came into being.

I loved making this painting, It has many wonderful associations which are very close to my heart. I am also looking forward to seeing the work of the other artists involved, so many responses to Frida Kahlo all in one location.

Sun Pier House Gallery, Chatham, residency during the month of July. 

I was delighted to be offered the opportunity of a residency at Sun Pier House Gallery, during the Medway arts festival. 

I decided to use this opportunity to experiment with documenting the walk I had organised as a part of the Research Forum, A Journey with The Waste Land.

Visitors were asked to walk on the paper to record their footprints and become a part of the walking memory.

I have been away so will post images of the marks on the paper when I return to Chatham.

Jennifer Deakin has been exhibiting some of  her photos of the walk in the gallery space next to the Quipu and it looks great. I hope some of you have time to visit before it comes down on July 31st.

The "Quipu", using the ropes which participants had knotted during the walk, now becomes the memory of that walk.
