A "Quipu" documenting our walk on May 25th and info about walk in June and July.
Hi All,
Thank you to those of you who joined our walk on May 25th. We walked from Margate Station to the Garden Gate project in Cliftonville. The inspiration for this walk came from a reading of Burnt Norton, one of TS Eliot's Four Quartets.The walk linked to the poem in many ways, not least the poem's concern with time as an abstract principle, given that we were (rightly) warned that accomplishing the walk in the allocated time was going to prove a challenge!
We were given a wonderful tour of the Garden Gate Project by Claire and Tim. The participants in the walk recorded the experience by making knots in ropes as we walked.I then used the ropes to document the walk in the form of a "Quipu" (http://archaeology.about.com/od/qterms/qt/quipu.htm).
Our next walk will take place on Wednesday June 29th when we will walk locating extracts from the poem in Margate. This walk is in preparation for the event on July 17th when we have been invited to do a Waste Land event as part of a conference at the University of Kent called Writing Buildings (https://www.kent.ac.uk/architecture/conference/2016/writingbuildings/ ). We have proposed a walk around Margate which will be an opportunity for us to create a sited reading of the poem where we all identify places we associate with different bits of the poem, to inform a walking route.
Please let me know if you'd like to take part in either event and I can include you on the mailing list. If you are unable to make these dates but have an idea you'd like to put forward, we can include it in the walk. By the same token if you would like to walk and read out someone else's suggestion that could also work. It would be great if we could all work together on this.
